City of Dreadful Night

2020-2021, ink and graphite on watercolor paper, vary in size from 9 x 9 in to 9 x 12 in

These drawings were commissioned by Seattle poetry book publisher Entre Rios Books for the Victorian poem City of Dreadful Night by Scottish poet James Thomson. An immeasurably bleak poem: “The City of Dreadful Night is a journey through the vast new urban landscape created by industrialization. In social isolation and economic exploitation the soul despairs, while grim Darwinism has replaced God and charlatans hawk an impossible afterlife.” Rather than depicting scenes of 19th-century urban England, these drawings portray the current housing crisis in Seattle, Washington.
