You Raise We Fold

2023, clothesline rope, clothes pins, screen printed t-shirts, 10’ x 10’ x 10’

Employing artistic strategies that expand on an art historical discourse initiated by artists such as Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Martha Rosler, You Raise We Fold places the issue of unpaid domestic labor into a larger societal context. In the United States, people conducting domestic labor are mostly under or unpaid, nor do they receive any substantial social service benefits. No national healthcare, guaranteed parental leave, subsidized childcare or retirement security exists. There is, however, an accumulation of profit resulting from this unpaid, or cheap, labor – someone, or some entity, benefits from it, but it’s not women like me.
